“Do you think Satiri will be more willing to help now that Tamin and Alastor are on board?” I asked as Caezar pulled into the driveway.

“Could be. The shake-ups within the organization clearly have everyone on edge. But every domino we knock over makes the next that much more likely to tumble down.”

“I’m still sorry, you know.” He came around to open my door for me. I glanced up, admiring him his handsome features. His stubble was looking extra rugged today, and his jawline, extra sharp. His gray eyes were entrancing—well worth getting lost in. “I hate that you have to outsource everything now.”

“It’s not your fault. I have no choice. I’m very busy these days, you see.” He slipped his tongue between his lips as he helped me out of the car, like he was admiring a particularly delicious treat and was ready to devour it. “Entirely too distracted to run my corporation.”

“And what’s distracting you so thoroughly, Mr. Vassago?” I bit my lip, arching up toward him. With a little roll of my hips, I brushed up against him. There was no music, and we were in a driveway, not a ballroom, but it felt almost like we were dancing.

“It seems, Miss Cage, that I’ve fallen madly in love.” Caezar took my face in his hands, and I laughed. “What’s so funny?”

“Miss Cage.” My smile was automatic and unrelenting at the sound of my fake name, the name I’d used to sneak into his life. “I forgot you used to call me that.”

“It suited you. At least, for a little while.” He ran his thumb across my lip. Electric. The jolt of need that followed made me shiver. “Not anymore, though.”

I narrowed my eyes and smirked at him. “I hope this isn’t your way of asking me to become Mrs. Vassago.”

He was silent for a moment, and my eyes widened as my heart leapt.

Oh.

Was he asking? Was this the moment?

I was having his baby, after all. I hadn’t exactly been obsessing over the idea of having a ring on my finger any time soon, but now that I was considering it…

Becoming Mrs. Vassago was a logical next step.

Caezar smiled, eyes glinting with devious delight as my breath began to quicken with suspense.

“No,” he said, and my heartbeat stopped before it resumed a normal pace. “Not right now.”

Ah. I glanced away to hide my embarrassment.

Of course, he wasn’t asking that. He loved me, and I loved him, but he’d been married before. To Sofia. He even still wore the rings.

I shouldn’t have been surprised. My womb carried his child, but in his heart, he was still married to her.

God. I’d been silly to even joke about it. I’d spend the rest of the day trying to swallow that shame.

As my cheeks began to burn, Caezar laughed.

“When I propose to you, darling, it will be at the moment you’re least expecting it, in the most flagrantly romantic way possible,” he assured me, and that assurance sent my heart racing all over again.
